I Added AI to Anki So I Actually Learn Instead of Just Reviewing

Open on YouTube ↗

The idea

I've tried to use Anki many times in my life, but honestly, I find it boring. What happens is that I skim through lots of words I already know, passing them automatically with very little mental effort, and I always get stuck on the same ones. The reason, I believe, is that I find it hard to make flashcards truly active, especially when I can't say the words out loud and have to do everything in my head.

This is why I started working on an add-on for Anki: instead of just revealing the answer, you write a full sentence with the word. Then an AI reads it and tells you what's off: grammar, word choice, or whether it just sounds weird to a native speaker.

It's slower than flipping cards, but it forces you to work even on words or concepts you already know.

Try it

  • Download: GitHub release v0.1.0 (the .ankiaddon file or the source)
  • It works with Ollama (which runs on your own computer), Gemini's free tier and a bunch of other APIs.

To set it up:

  1. Get an API key, or install Ollama if you want everything local
  2. Install the add-on
  3. Turn it on for the decks you want

Desktop only for now.

Known issues

It's a v0.1: keep in mind that the AI can hallucinate and, more importantly, that there may be bugs.
